We had a good night...his fever stayed away for the most part and I actually slept for 4 hours. My body finally waved the white flag and I didn't hear one thing that went on from 11-3am. I actually left the hospital for the first time since Wed. I am at home and seeing my other kids who I missed terribly. I am very hesitant to be away from him, but my nurse assured me it was good to get away when I can since he is going to be here for a little bit.
We saw the doctor this morning and we did get some good news. His meningitis came back negative. I never really thought about him having that, but based the doctor's excitement of being negative I guess that they were thinking differently. The bad news is his blood is inflamed so there is an active blood infection somewhere. Based on the culture results we get tomorrow will give us an idea of what exactly we are dealing with.
His breathing/ lung infection that is another issue in itself. They are so focused on dealing with his blood infection that they are just monitoring him and giving him breathing treatments. The doctor still hadn't read his xray when I left, but based on the crackles they respiration therapist said she still hears I know he still has a way to go.
In terms of our hospital stay it will definitely be through the next week. He probably has another 5 days (best case scenario) on IV antibiotics and then the Dr. will factor in his other issues at that time. He is still on the nasal cannula for oxygen and I have no clue when they may attempt to take him off. They lowered his oxygen intake last night, but this morning they raised it back up. The doctor keeps saying it is more for comfort, but yesterday when they took him off of it briefly to do his spinal tap he Desatted right away and that is not a great sign.
He is definitely moving in the right direction. Today he is back into more of a regular routine of sleep and awake patterns. It is so nice to see his beautiful eyes staring at me, to know that he wants to be held, and isn't a fan of his breathing treatments and suctioning that takes place every 3 hours (up until this point he would just sleep through it). They are letting him eat again, but only formula so I have been pumping like crazy which sucks. There are 2 reasons for this. The one they are vocal about to us is getting his jaundice under control. It is at a 11, which is not that high or uncommon for a 3 weeker that is only breast fed. The problem is he was at a 12 when he was 4 days old so his body is still not breaking it down as fast as it should be. The unspoken reason is to make sure it is breast feeding jaundice and not because his liver is not functioning correctly. In babies with sepsis this is a very big concern because the infection can spread to these organs.
All in all I feel very relieved and I am finally believing that he will come home with us. Yesterday at this time I felt like we were preparing for the worst and I was trying my best to understand why this was happening or even how we got into this situation in the first place. I was in such a hurry to get him here because I was so sure that outside of me was safer than inside and ironically enough outside of me almost did what I feared the most. I really do appreciate all the thoughts and prayers and will continue to keep everyone updated.

So glad the Meningitis tests came back negative... So so glad.
Happy to hear he is feeling a little better and you got a little sleep in, too.
Do they think this is the result of a germ he picked up, or is it an issue that he was going to have regardless? or does it have anything to do with an earlier birth? So puzzling! Of course I am curious for those of us preparing to induce and such earlier than our due dates. I am so glad things are improving, but I am still just in such shock that this is happening at all to you! Thoughts and prayers with you always!
Darcey, that's such good news! Every little step in the right direction is a blessing! I hope you're able to take good care of yourself physically while you deal with the emotional trauma of this scare. Hugs!!
Yes, SO thankful the meningitis came back negative but I know it's still a very long, scary road for you. It's never okay that this happens and especially not to someone who has already been through so much.
With you in heart and spirit, mama.
So glad to read things are looking better. You guys have been on my mind non-stop. Thanks for the update!
I am so thankful that things are moving in the right direction. You and Layton have been on my mind all day (and I finally just got the chance to sit down right now). Please keep us updated when you can. Thinking and praying for you both.
Darcey I've just read back about your poor Layton!
Words can't express what you must be going through, have gone through and I hope he continues to move in the right direction now. My thoughts are with you in getting your family together Darcey.
Praying for you
